Intro Classes

These classes are where we encourage people to start, although some choose to start out in fundamentals classes. Our intro classes are small group classes for new beginners who have never done any grappling art or sport before. You will try basic movements, get a map of the territory so to speak and try a few basic, safe techniques that don’t require any athleticism.

Fundamental classes

These are our beginners classes but often more experienced people join in. These classes are the foundation of jiu jitsu that give you something to build on no matter what you long-term goals are. These classes are offered in gi and no gi but gripping strategy isn’t their main emphasis. Whether you want to learn self-defense, become a sport competitor (hobby or professional), or are training for fun these classes will give you a good physical, skill, and knowledge base. You don’t have to be “in shape” to start these classes, you will build physical shape by doing them! The class structure is a very short warmup using either partner or individual jiu jitsu movement drills, about 30 minutes of technical teaching and practice at your own pace followed by 8-12 minutes of competitive but limited live competitive training.

Intermediate classes

Usually students will move into this level after 4-10 months of training. The basic class structure is the same as fundamentals except that we focus on more nuanced aspects of techniques such as gripping the gi. We also spend more time in the standing position, emphasize submissions more heavily, and introduce leg lock attacks. The live training is less limited to specific positions.  Students must have a rank of at least 3 stripe white belt or be invited by an instructor to participate in these classes.

Open Mats

This is where students can direct their own training. Most student spend much of their time in open mats doing live training/sparring. We recommend all intermediate students get some mat time during open mats. Students must have a rank of at least 3 stripe white belt or be invited by an instructor to participate in this class.

Advanced Classes

These classes are not taught on a curriculum but are blocks usually lasting 2-6 weeks where a theme is followed. For example in a no gi advanced block we may work on heel hook finishing/breaking pressure, or for another example, we may work on countering worm guard grips in a gi class. The live training is usually situational and we have the flexibility to use interesting training formats not possible in other classes.  Students must have a rank of at least 3 stripe blue belt or be invited by an instructor to participate.

Drilling only class

This class format has no live competitive training and it is for any level although its not recommended for very new beginners. It focuses on transitions between positions, continuous flow technique sequences, and repetitive movement drills. It is a good workout without live training. All belt ranks can participate

Small Group

There are MANY important benefits to being part of a school with a large member base like ours. We also offer small group classes with 8 or less people per class and with the same people every week. These classes allow our most experienced instructors give student more individual attention and semi-customize a training program that fits a students specific goal, and skill level. We can also teach in a way that builds off of previous classes that isn’t possible in other class formats. Small group classes are approximately 1.5 hours. Space is limited.
