Why is Jiu Jitsu so popular right now? The simple answer is that it makes peoples’ lives better. At Stout Training Pittsburgh -Team Renzo Gracie, we always keep this as our mission. Here are a few images of some of our students doing BJJ. We have people from all walks of life including, university students, professionals, artists, law enforcement, men, women, full-time jiu jitsu competitors, mma fighters, and casual practitioners over 50 years old.
I have trained jiu jitsu at numerous gyms throughout the county, and this is my favorite place to train. The atmosphere is very different from a typical MMA gym. Every student and the instructor Warren Stout has a smile, and that alone made me feel welcome from the first day. The professor has a talent in explaining his sequences of techniques in a way I could easily understand and he explains concepts with amazing detail. These are traits few instructors have. The curriculum is highly structured and is different for each level. The training center is very clean and they have amazing training partners that are not only friendly but are also the top in the area. I would highly recommend this gym.

We know that every person training Jiu Jitsu is different. We’ve optimized our class and training structure so that every one will be able to progress and reach their different goals. A beginner who is not in the prime shape of his or her life does not want the same training and instruction as an experienced competitive athlete. We have 3 levels of class. We also offer both gi and no-gi training at all levels.
We built our reputation here in Pittsburgh on providing the best quality BJJ instruction around. Jiu Jitsu instruction is NOT a commodity where one is the same as the other. Our instructors’ accomplishments in competitions and other areas of training stand out in the area. See for yourself how their passion for teaching can help you reach your potential. In addition, we have a diverse group of members of all skill levels (blackbelt to whitebelt), all sizes, including both men and women (currently over 40 female jiu jitsu members).
We are not just Pittsburgh’s only school affiliated with a Gracie Family member, we are also part of the exclusive Renzo Gracie association. We are part of a larger family that includes many of the Worlds best BJJ competitors and MMA champions (Georges St-Pierre, Frankie Edgar, Gregor Gracie, and Roger Gracie. The Estima Brothers, Victor and Braulio, also train no-gi with Team Renzo Gracie). Our members regularly travel to the Main NYC academy and we have visitors from all over the world from other RGA schools. There is no application to be a Renzo Gracie Affiliate. It is a exclusive group, one of the world’s strongest teams, where all schools have and owner/instructor who trained under Renzo and his head instructors in NYC. Warren Stout is a Renzo Gracie Black Belt.
Our school is not for everyone. Every BJJ school has a style and we have our own. If you just drank 3 protein shakes with anabolic enhancers, kicked your dog, and are looking to" throw-down" on Carson Street, then we are probably not the right place for you. If you are looking to join a cult and worship a "master" or "sensei" then we are probably not the right place for you. We strive to be respectful and organized. At the same time we like to maintain an environment that is generally informal but focused. We strive to be a group of friends and have fun while at the same time trying to excel to our full potential.
Our facility is designed by jiu jitsu practitioners for Brazilian jiu jitsu. It features the safest mats (Zebra flex-roll) including wall mats up to 6 feet on all four sides. Our secondary room features Zebra tatami surface mats with a subfloor. We have men’s and women’s restrooms and showers. We are located in Pittsburgh’s Strip District, less than a mile from Downtown Pittsburgh.
Our instructors are professionals who are passionate about Jiu Jitsu. They ensure that you are always learning and striving to reach your goals. Our reputation is built on great instruction, so we are very proud of the quality of classes provided by these individuals. Some of our instructors are also the area’s best competitors in the sport of jiu jitsu.
After my first Jiu Jitsu class at Stout Training Pittsburgh, I was hooked. It has been a little over 4 months and I am so happy I decided to join. As a woman over 35 years old with no prior martial arts experience, I was initially concerned that I was too old to learn Jiu Jitsu, but I quickly found out that is simply not true. The staff at Stout Training works with you regardless of your physical fitness level, so you do not need to be in good shape to join. If you are not in good shape, you will be soon enough. I did not know anyone at the academy before I joined and found the other students to be nice, helpful, and fun. I always enjoy coming to class. I was delightfully surprised at how welcoming the academy is to women, which is not the case in many other training facilities. There is a nice group of women who regularly attend classes.

In 45 minutes you get a great strength workout, your heart-rate is up the whole time so you increase endurance, you will improve balance, coordination, mobility, flexibility, and learn to control breathing all while having fun and hardly realizing you are working.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ( BJJ ) is one of the fastest growing sports worldwide. It is enjoyed by people of all ages, and by both men and women. It is also an integral (perhaps THE integral) part of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Events such as UFC are among the most popular spectator sports in the world. On the other hand, many people enjoy the challenge and special camaraderie that jiu jitsu brings and never enter formal competition.
Those who must defend themselves and others such as police and military have universally adopted jiu jitsu techniques and principals. Even proponents of weapon-based self defense systems often use jiu jitsu. Most fight situations and many self defense situations end on the ground.
I joined Renzo Gracie Pittsburgh in October 2012 and have been training there 4-6 days a week ever since. I regularly attend the BJJ, conditioning, and MMA classes. I have experienced a great deal personal growth through training BJJ and I urge anyone who is on the fence about joining, to take the plunge. Team Renzo Gracie Pittsburgh is the place to be.
