I love attending the Muay Thai Kickboxing classes at Stout Training. I had never done Muay Thai before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Everyone is so welcoming and willing to work with you at your pace, and the instructors are always willing to answer any questions or clarify proper technique before or after class. Stout training also encourages out of the gym interaction and bonding by hosting different events for gym members, family, and friends. It's a great community to be a part of.

Muay Thai is an ancient art that has been practiced for at least the past 1000 years in Thailand. Because it uses knee and elbow strikes as well as punches and kicks, it is particularly effective as a self-defense art. Muay Thai also addresses standup grappling situations (called the clinch by fighters) which increases its effectiveness as a fighting art. The use of elbow and knees as well as the clinch position are just a couple of differences from American kickboxing. Unlike some martial arts that rely on theory to justify their effectiveness, Muay Thai is battle tested and continues to be practiced in sport competitions by dedicated fighters. Almost all serious Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) athletes incorporate some concepts from Muay Thai into their training.
We don’t just cater to fighters. Most of our members have never done any martial arts prior to starting our Muay Thai kickboxing program. Individual results vary, but Muay thai is one of the best ways to burn fat and lose weight* ( Disclaimer). We offer four types of classes. “Conditioning classes feature a mix of basic technique and physical “cardio” endurance training. There is little or no contact. “Techniques” classes focuses on learning Muay Thai techniques including some light clinch work, light sparring drills, pad and bagworm. There is no combative sparring at this level. Advanced level classes are focused on high level technique and feature clinch sparring, advanced pad work, and supervised sparring. We also have open free training and one on one training available.
Stout Training Pittsburgh’s head striking instructor David Reese is one of a hand-full of people in the United State who have deep experience in Thai fighting arts and Kickboxing. He lived and fought in Thailand, not as a tourist but as a member of a Thai family. He is now dedicated to growing Pittsburgh Muay Thai Kickboxing. Read more about him in our instructors section. Our assistant instructors are experienced fighters, but more importantly are personable and great motivators.
Want to compete in Muay Thai? Although the majority of our students don’t compete we have an active competition team that fights in local events as well as internationally. We do regular trips to Thailand to compete and train as well.
All of our instructors are fighters but more importantly they are gifted teachers and love what they do. They will help you reach your goals, whatever they may be. Our curriculums are designed to give different skill and fitness levels the best learning experience possible.
We have morning, noon, evening, and weekend classes.
Our facility is designed to facilitate Muay Thai Training. We have a large space with high ceilings featuring floor mats, heavy bags, and other equipment. We also have mens and women's lockers with showers.
The problem with most exercise classes is that they are not fun. People don't stick with it. Muay Thai keeps you learning and stimulates. You also meet great people so it is more likely to keep you training regularly. It is also one of the most efficient fat burners*. (Disclaimer: Individual results may vary.)
